31 days of INTERNATIONAL ZINE MONTH – July 2022

it’s that time of year again (and yes i know i’m a few days late posting about it but since when do zinesters do anything on time???) i’m trying to follow the prompts on our twitter, but i’m already behind hahahah

by the way, Alex Wrekk the founder of IZM did a nice wee interview with DIY conspiracy about IZM2022 =

31 Days of International Zine Month 2021 #IZM2021

1 – What is a zine? Come up with a concise definition in your own words and share it with others.

2 – Zine Rewind! Re-read your favorite zines and remind yourself why you love them. If you’re new to zines, read a zine that is more than 10 years old!

3 – Look up upcoming zines in events in real life or virtual zine events that you can attend! When else are you going to be able to attend a zine event in a different city or even country for free?

4 – AmeriZine Day! Explore marginalized voices in the Americas. Buy, share, and read zines about racial justice and zines written by BIPOC (Black Indigenous and People of Color) from the Americas. Need a place to start? Check out Brown Recluse Zine Distro

5 – Review a zine: post it online or write a review to print in your next zine.

6 – Zine Pride Day! Explore LGBTQIA+ zines! Buy, share, and read zines by people of marginalized sexual orientations and gender identities. Check out the Queer Zine Archive Project

7 – What is a zine distro? Educate yourself of what zine distros are, how they operate, and how they pick zines to carry. Support a distro near you!

8 – Cook with a recipe you found in a zine! Bonus: Photograph the result and post it online or print it in a zine!

9  – Buy direct! Do you sell your zines online? Update your shop and post a link to it online so people can get your zines directly from you. or Buy directly from someone who posts a link to their shop.

10 – Write a letter or send a message to a zinester, just a quick note to let them know you appreciate what they do

11- International Zine Day! Buy, share, or read zines from a country different than your own.

12 – ZineWiki Day! It’s a wiki just for zines! Add to or update listings to the new and improved

13 – Make up a zine superstition and share it (skip the 13th issue? Spin 3 times to prevent copier jams or avoid paper cuts? Your best friend has to read your zine before anyone else?)

14 – ValenZines Day! Give yourself some zine love in whatever way it means to you! read zines in a bubble bath? Buy some new scissors? Let your zine friends know you care about them.

15 – Free Zine Day! Offer your zine for free online or – if it’s safe to do so where you are – leave zines in public places for strangers to find and enjoy.

16 – Make a list of reasons you love zines and share your list with others!

17 – Make a flyer for your zine to trade with others, post online, or send out with zine orders and trades.

18 – Zine Trade Day! Ask someone to trade or swap zines with you.

19 – Zine Distro Appreciation Day! Tell people about your favorite zine distros! Order zines from a distro.

20 – Tell someone about something you learned in a zine. Start with “I once read in a zine that…”

21 – Zine Library Day! Search for a zine library in your area and make plans to go someday or contact them about how to include your zine in their collection.

23 – Check out a zine distro you have never ordered from before.

24 -Teach yourself a new zine skill like a new binding technique or how to make a 1 page zine

25 –  Send your zine out for review to a website or magazine that does reviews.

26 – Organize your zine collection. Post a shelfie online.

27 – Ask a zine friend if they would like to do a split zine or collaboration with you.

28 – Post online about your favorite zines!

29 – Take a photo of you with your zine or zine collection and post it online.

30 -Write a letter or online post about your IZM2021 experience

31 – HallowZine! Remember zines and zinesters that are no longer with us.

Throughout the month bonuses :

Read a zine a day

Do the 24 Hour Zine Thing (make a zine to your skill level in 24 hours)

Write or draw a page a day and then add a cover to create a 32-page zine-in-a-month!

TEXT VERSION COPIED FROM 2021 (tried to update it where i noticed differences but i’m sure i missed something.

we’re back? our first in person zine fest since . . . the before times

ok so we’ve been here the whole time, just quiet. tinkering away at other thing (mostly knitting and watching horror films in bed) but we’re crawling out of hibernation and doing our first in person zine fest since february 2020. do i still know how to do this? we’re about to find out!

SATURDAY 14th May 2022, from 12 :00pm to 4:30pm
@ Brixton Library, Brixton Oval, London SW2 1JQ
event page / facebook event / brixton buzz article

Join us for another zine fair at the library – local self-published, photocopied and cheap publications from zinesters, writers, artists and creatives will be on sale all afternoon.

There’ll be up to 20 stalls of fanzines and more that you can pick up, read, buy and swap.

Stallholders include the local Brixton Review of Books, South Asian punk zine WEIRDO, perzines from Vampire Hag distro, small press literature from 3 of cups and much more.

You can also drop off your zine to be sold at the individual zines table – so get out your scissors and glue, get to the photocopier and make that zine!

we’ve got some exciting new stuff happening, keep your eyes peeled, and if you see this in time and you can do it, COME SEE US AT THE BRIXTON LIBRARY.

as you may know we had to recently turn off eu postage while figuring out how to deal with changes to EU import VAT and IOSS blah blah blah. well, sadly i still don’t know how to do the IOSS / VAT thing without moving the shop to a platform that’s already registered for it, like etsy. and i don’t like etsy due to the fees + doing accurate postage is impossible on there for orders of more than one item, i’d rather not.

i’ve spoken to some other UK small businesses and fellow distro’s about it and asked how they’re dealing with it and have come to the conclusion to just not do it? apparently that’s an option. however from now on EU customers will be liable for any VAT and handling charges on their order. i have sent some mail to EU countries and so far there haven’t been any fees? i wish there was a better solution but apparently not. but anyway EU shipping is available again if you wish to be a guinea pig 😀 if there are lots of issues, i might end up opening an etsy shop for the distro with limited stock in the future but we’ll see.

i’ve put added a note about the vat situation to the mainpage AND the top of the shopping basket page so hopefully it won’t be a surprise to anyone?

DEAR EU CUSTOMERS: due to recent EU import VAT changes, customers from the EU will be liable for VAT and handling charges on all orders when they enter their destination country. by ordering from us your accept responsibility for these charges.

hiya pals, i have some bad news. i’ve had to turn off shipping to EU / Europe for the time being due to the EU VAT changes etc that came into place on July 1st. it’s super confusing and it’s unclear if WooCommerce which i use to run this shop has signed up for IOSS which you apparently need for EU mail. i’ve got some personal stuff on my plate at the moment so i don’t have the mental capacity to properly look into it until the end of next week (after july 15th) i don’t even know if any of this applies to me because someone said books and magazines are exempt but who knows, and i rather play it safe until i know what i’m supposed to do. if anyone understands this / knows what’s up, please let me know (vampirehag at gmail dot com is the email, no reply guys though, please.) i might have to move the shop to etsy, just to make that simpler cos they do that VAT and IOSS codes for you, but the fees and a bunch of aesthetic issues. we’ll see.

in the meantime, you can sign up for our mailing list, i will definitely send out an update on there when i figure things out. as well as any other BIG NEWS, so i definitely won’t be clogging up your inbox lol. i’m working on a bunch of new stuff though, so there will be news soon, I SWEAR.

ok so we are already HALFWAY through april but better late than never. this month is glasgow zine fest month! obviously we can’t be doing zine festing in person, so glasgow zine library decided to make the zine fest online again this year, but instead of just the weekend, they made it THE WHOLE MONTH. and we’re there again because glasgow zine fest is one of the highlights of our year even if we can’t do it in person. they have a lot of online activities like workshops and panels and talks and stuff, + an online zine fair. you can see me have a big silly ramble on in a video on our zine fair page.

probably should have posted about the online zine fest before, but i guess i wanted to also have some new zines to share with you! and now i do!

ever since i got sexie lexie our crowdfunded laser printer / photocopier, i’ve been wanting to organise printing other people’s zines for the distro, but i’m a world class procrastinator and i wasn’t sure what would be the best way to do it, and i’ve finally sorted out half of that project and i have some new distro zines i print here at Vampire Hag HQ instead of getting the zinesters to make copies and send them in. i still pay the zinesters for their work, but a little less since i’m doing the hard work of printing, and they don’t have the printing costs. saves me the trouble of ordering more in when i run out 😀 it’s an especially handy arrangement with zines from outside UK. my first testers for this arrangement are Nina of Echo Publishing and Different Worlds Same Heartbeats and Alex Wrekk of Brainscan zine, Portland Button Works and Stolen Sharpie Revolution.

i also have a little fundraising print going on, because i need a new PROPER GOOD paper trimmer, since alex’s zines are formatted for US paper which is a different shape from our beloved A-series, so i have a bunch of excess paper to trim off the edges 🙁 i have a shitty little paper trimmer carl brought home from his charity shop but it’s so bad i rather use my scissors, and while scissors were fine for cutting my own zines, they’re no fun for trimming off 4cm from 18 sheets of paper just to make one zine D: so i drew my scissors and some of my favourite zining supplies (pens and spooky stampers) and made it into an A4 print you can buy for £5 to help my buy one. the paper trimmer i have my eye on is a Fiskars Surecut A4 Paper Trimmer and it’s £30. that means just six people have to buy the print.

NEW IN STOCK = brainscan #34, bring me my scissors A4 print, confined #1, confined #2, different worlds same heartbeats #17, scissors and chainsaws #2, yngwho?

BACK IN STOCK = brainscan #33, different worlds same heartbeats #14, different worlds same heartbeats #15

hi it’s been a while, but i’m here with you a small update of some new stickers, and a handful of new and back in stock zines <3 we’ve been open through most of the pandemic, par the months of september and october because i had to travel to finland for a family emergency (my mum died of surprise cancer, not covid etc) everything is very strange and terrible so i’ve been extra not great at keeping on top of things, which is ok (except when i do it according to my brain) but i’ve been slowly posting orders as i’ve got them the next time one of us has gone outside, because i’ve been using click & drop and printing the postage at home, so all i need to do is put the mail in a post box if it fits, and our orders are rarely so big they won’t fit in. i’ve been posting everything 1st class because i felt bad about the delay posting, but i doubt it makes that much difference to the speed of delivery at the moment so i’ve decided to change the postage to 2nd class to save a few pennies. as you might suspect, money is not abundant but thankfully c’s furlough + my uc pay the rent, bills & grub at the moment, and that’s nice. we’re surviving. hope you are too. x

NEW IN STOCK = growing and gardens #1, sad ghost pumpkin sticker, the diet starts never / baby yoda sticker, tooticky’s typewriter sticker

BACK IN STOCK = here. in my head #15, here. in my head #16, here. in my head #18, here. in my head #19, here. in my head #20, never kill a boy on the first date #1 – a buffy fanzine

Call for Submissions Reminder = FIVE BY FIVE – a Faith the Vampire Slayer fanzine

the latest (and final, honest!) deadline for the issue one of our Faith the Vampire Slayer fanzines, FIVE BY FIVE is getting closer and closer! so it’s time for an official reminder over here in the n e w s bit!

FIVE BY FIVE – a Faith the Vampire Slayer fanzine

because why should Buffy get all the love and attention?

we’re looking for anything Faith Lehane related, really. fan art, essays, lists, fanfic, w/e – SEND IT OUR WAY to even just email us if you have an idea/any suggestions, even if it’s one you feel like you can’t execute yourself. you can also use the contact form, that’s one of the reasons it’s there for.

we have a handful of great submissions already but we still need more! especially fan fic/more queer content (i think you know exactly what i’m talking about..) non essays, and we definitely need MORE ART to make it all look good etc!

Here’s some more topic suggestions

Faith & queer rage/betrayal
‘go ask malice’, the diaries of Faith Lehane
Angel & Faith comics
how This Years Girl/Who Are You are A LOT especially when you read being a slayer as a metaphore for being queer.

ARTWORK INFO_the zine is going to be A5 (148mm x 210 mm / 5.8 x 8.3 in) and mostly in black and white + it will be a photocopied zine! i might include a couple of colour pages, but i’m not sure yet. minimum 150dpi. any further questions, email us or use the contact form, again.

i really really REALLY want this zine done and ready to ‘launch’ at Glasgow Zine Fest 2020 which is 18th & 19th April, so please get writing, drawing, whatevering for it. luckily i can now print at home (yay!) so i can be somewhat flexible with the deadline, but please let me know if you’re planning to make something but need a few days extra.

hi we’re back from not doing much and then Weirdo Zine Fest Leeds and on the way we have picked up a lot of new stuff:

NEW IN STOCK: adventures in academia #1, adventures in academia #2, bucket of entrails #1, episode 2: the reweddening, fanzine ynfytyn #21, fanzine ynfytyn #26, fanzine ynfytyn #27 + #23.5 bundle, fanzine ynfytyn #29, fault and fracture #5, fibromyalgia, grrrl con 2017, midwifery quest, spoons zine, the tracks of my life, vampire hag 10th birthday zine, your pretty face is going straight to hell #27.

BACK IN STOCK: aspects of uranus, deadname #1, film photography 101, keep it clean, light light sleep #1, one false move #5, opinionated nobody #12 / fault and fracture #6 split.

UUSI VUOSI, UUDET KUJEET ~ (new year, new tricks) as we say back home in finland. i have a bunch of fancy plans for the year and i’m working on it, even though i’ve had a bit of a knock back with being made redundant from my day job and sadly zine stuff really does not pay the rent. i want to do maximum zine fest, and start offering zine printing services to other zinesters (still figuring out pricing etc, sorry) and just other craft things too. so keep your eye out for us. x

ps i don’t know if you noticed, but the NEW IN STOCK includes our 10th year birthday zine, finally. it has actually been done since before christmas, and listed on here but i just havent promoted it in anyway because.. i honestly don’t know why. but here it is! with orange covers (thought it kind of looks red, but the seller said orange!) 48 pages, with 8 of them in full colour, wow!

also i’ve gone and had a diddle with the website layout because i’m just never entirely happy with it (i miss the old days of just HTML when you could pretty easily alter website templates,  if you knew what you were looking for. i suppose it still probably is, but i just don’t know what i’m looking for or where to find it anymore.) but i think i’m pretty close now? if there’s any issues with the new layout, please let me know. that’s what twitter and the contact form is for (though most of the time the contact form mail is spam about working with instagram influencers  or SEO services that are just not relevant to a little old zine distro) also instagram and facebook, but i’m less likely to see messages on there for some reason…
